All five inmates who escaped from a Missouri jail this week were in custody as of Saturday morning, the St. Francois County Sheriff’s Department said. A woman and a boy were fatally attacked by a polar bear in Alaska on Tuesday, authorities said. The bear went on a rampage in the small community of Wales, and a resident fatally shot the polar bear as it attacked the woman and the boy, the state Public Safety Department said in a dispatch. Troopers and state Department of Fish and Game officials will travel there when weather conditions allow it, according to the dispatch. Fatal polar bear attacks have been rare in Alaska’s recent history. In 1990, a polar bear killed a man farther north of Wales in the village of Point Lay.

Eight people were injured, one critically, in a shooting Monday during a holiday car show in Fort Pierce, Florida, authorities said. NBC affiliate WPTV of West Palm Beach reported one of those four is a child. Sheriff's officials said it wasn't a mass shooting where victims were struck randomly by gunfire. WPTV reported the shooting was preceded by an argument between two people. The car show was listed as part of the city's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration.

A father spent most of the weekend in jail after his young boy was seen on security video waving a loaded handgun around an Indiana apartment complex, authorities said Monday. At first, the boy moves rapidly to a staircase and points the gun down its slope for a beat, the video shows. Officers responding to the report of the boy with a gun were being recorded for immediate broadcast on "On Patrol: Live" on cable network Reelz. The neighbor said she looked through her front door peephole and saw the boy standing above with the gun held behind his back. A woman with the same last name as the suspect lives in a separate apartment, according to the report.

Police in Albuquerque on Monday announced the arrest of a failed candidate for state Legislature in a string of shootings at locations associated with high-profile Democratic leaders. Republican Solomon Peña is accused of conspiring with and paying four men to carry out four shootings at the homes of two Bernalillo County commissioners and two state legislators. But on Monday, Albuquerque Police Chief Harold Medina described Peña as the initiator of the shootings. Ballistics evidence from one of the shootings connected the case to the suspect, Medina said. The Albuquerque Journal describes the suspect as unsuccessful candidate for New Mexico House District 14, which represents the Albuquerque area's South Valley.

A former University of Alabama basketball player was behind bars Sunday night after he was arrested in connection with a fatal shootout near campus, authorities said. He was booked on suspicion of murder and was being held without bail, the office said in a statement. Miles' name wasn't on the institution's basketball roster online late Sunday. The sheriff's statement addressed his status with the university in past tense. The other suspect, also booked on an allegation of capital murder, was identified as Michael Lynn Davis, 20, of Charles County, Maryland.

A Maine resident purchased the winning ticket ahead of Friday $1.35 billion Mega Millions jackpot drawing — the second-largest in the game's history, lottery officials said. The lotto winner matched all six numbers in the game, which hasn't crowned a jackpot winner since Oct. 14.
